Tropical TGF Paradox: A Perspective From TRMM Precipitation Radar

نویسندگان

چکیده

Abstract The Terrestrial Gamma‐ray Flash (TGF) to lightning ratio, computed over the three tropical chimneys, presents a paradox: African thunderstorms produce most but yield lowest fraction of TGFs when compared American and Southeast Asian thunderstorms. To understand physical insights into this asymmetry, Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission Precipitation Radar measurements are used depict vertical precipitation structure infer electrical charge distribution observed in regions during TGF occurrences detected by AGILE, Fermi‐GBM, RHESSI sensors. Regional differences show that taller, smaller, have higher concentration denser ice particles (graupel or hail) above freezing level addition having more flashes per thunderstorm. overall TGF‐related intense (0.5–1.5 dBZ) present similar radar reflectivity decay with height independent region. two dimensional diagrams indicate develop mature stage. Independent region, midlevel negative center varying from 4.6 8.1 km an upper positive ranging 7.4 14.6 km. thicker inferred layer larger distances between opposite charging layers comparison thunderstorm population, here defined as Climatology. charges near layer, helping shorter discharges.

Trmm Precipitation Radar Version 6 Algorithms

Following the first (1991-1993) and the second (1994-1996) TRMM PR teams, and the third international TRMM PR team (1997-2000), the fourth international TRMM PR team (2001-2003) started its job in 2001 based on the NRA-99-OES-03 in 1999 and NASDA-3rd RA-TRMM in 2000. In April 2004, the fourth international TRMM PR team completed the revisions of the standard algorithms to version 6. NASA and JA...

Vertical Structure of Tropical Cyclone Rainbands as Seen by the TRMM Precipitation Radar

Ten years of data from the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission satellite’s Precipitation Radar (TRMM PR) show the vertical structure of tropical cyclone rainbands. Radar-echo statistics show that rainbands have a two-layered structure, with distinct modes separated by the melting layer. The ice layer is a combination of particles imported from the eyewall and ice left aloft as convective cell...

A TRMM-Based Tropical Cyclone Cloud and Precipitation Feature Database

The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite has provided invaluable data for tropical cyclone (TC) research since December 1997. The challenge, however, is how to analyze and efficiently utilize all of the information from several instruments on TRMM that observe the same target. In this study, a tropical cyclone precipitation, cloud, and convective cell feature (TCPF) database has...

Tropical Rainfall-surface Temperature Relations Using Trmm Precipitation Data

In this study, nine-years (1998-2006) of monthly precipitation data from Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) are used to examine the relations between tropical rainfall and surface temperature. A technique is developed to adjust the PR monthly rainfall data in the Tropics (whole ocean and whole land) to account for the effect of the TRMM orbit boost from 350 km to 402 km in August 2001. ...
